The inception of The Big Nut Company originated in 1967 by
by its original proprietors Joe and Alice Mora. At that time they offered only
three products, Jumbo Cashews, Jumbo Clawed Peanuts and Butter Toasted Peanuts.
The company was in operation approximately 22 years when Joe Mora passed away.
Left to his wife Alice, she found she was unable to operate the business by
herself, so she was forced to stop servicing her customers.
John Robertson, a loyal customer and lover of their Jumbo Clawed Peanuts asked a
local storeowner when, and if, they would be getting any more nuts in their
store. The storeowner replied, "the owner of the company had passed away and no
more nuts would be delivered". John asked the storeowner if he thought the wife
would be interested in selling the business. The storeowner gave John her phone
number and replied, "give her a call, it's worth a shot". John, a part-time
politician and military man contacted Alice and struck up a bargain. John
operated the business for approximately four years when he was called in to
active military duty in Desert Storm. John's wife was also unable to run the
business by herself, so John packed everything up, and put it in storage for
about 3 1/2 years.
Joe Bush, a local entertainer and businessman had been working at the Showboat
Casino, in Atlantic City for seven years with his partner George the monkey. Joe
was told that the casino had been sold to Harrah's and his contract would not be
renewed for the upcoming season. Joe had sold his former business thinking that
he would retire at the Showboat Casino. He then found himself looking for a new
business. So Joe ran an ad in the local newspaper under the business wanted
column. He received many responses including the peanut business. After many
meetings with its then owner John Robertson, Joe decided to purchase the
business to include all the knowledge, recipes, customer base of around 60
customers, and some basic nut equipment. Since the business was inactive for
about four years, as part of the deal, John had agreed to introduce him to the
past customers.
The Big Nut Company is alive again, and is now called Monkey Joe's Big Nut Co.
It took almost 6 months to acquire a location to cook, prepare and package
before we could even deliver our first package. By the end of the first year we
had to add onto our building, as space was getting scarce. After 3 years of our
purchase we now offer more then a dozen products, and still adding, as well as,
growing to over 1100 accounts, and still counting. Even after adding a second
addition, we find ourselves having to consider looking for another building.
We at Monkey Joe's Big Nut Co. are proud to offer our customers a line of fine
quality gourmet nuts. They are unlike any other in this part of the country.
Everything is natural, fresh cooked and homemade everyday. Our products have a
reputation for quality and excellence since 1967.
Monkey Joe's Big Nut Company has continued the original
"BAR- MORA" recipe
by using all natural ingredients and selecting the biggest and crunchiest nuts available on the market today.
